See if you can figure out at which point in this Slog post my head exploded.

For background, Muslim Somali immigrants in Minnesota are refusing to perform job duties (like handling pork products at the grocery store as a checker, or transporting alcohol or drunk people as a cab driver) because of their religious beliefs.

Here's a money quote: "The widespread response: This is America, and you're free to practice your faith. You're not free to inconvenience others because of those beliefs."

my knee-jerk reaction is to say well, if you don't want to deal with pork, don't work in a store that sells it. and if you must, take a position that doesn't necessitate your handling of it and let your grownups know ahead of time that you're not keen on the pork touchage. ditto drunks.

however, with the language barrier, shoddy-at-best hiring practices, and general lack of effective cross-cultural communicatory skillage that's pretty near impossible. even though minneapolis has a hyooooge somali community, there's really very little ourteach.

Your knee-jerk reaction is the same as mine. I can't lift 100 lbs, so I'm not going to get a job where heavy lifting is a requirement.

Ding!

Similarly, don't go into pharmacy if you aren't cool with selling day-after pills.

I'm an athiest--but I think I'm going to break into the Rabbi business. Then I've got a sweet job that technically allows me to do NOTHING.

unless you're a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, etc. if you're an immigrant grunt worker, all bets are off.
